I was checking out Paragon Products and found the following:

Boxster Top Fix $64.95
“In the convertible top mechanism, Porsche uses a plastic rod end that pulls/pushes the top when operating. There have been instances of this piece breaking possibly causing some major damage to the tonneau cover. We've heard reports of up to $2000 damage! The dealers will only sell you the whole rod. The ends are not sold separately.
KLA Engineering has come up with a metal replacement for the ends that will not break and probably outlast the car. In the picture, the factory piece is on top. The replacement is on the bottom. One price will get you a new pair of ends (one for each side) and complete replacement instructions.”

After seeing all of the posts regarding top failures, this might be the solution. Does anyone have experience with this product?

If it works as advertised, maybe we could get together and fix the our tops at same time.

Unfortunately, this might not be a good idea.

The cause of the top issue is the lack of metal re-inforcement in the sheath that surrounds the shaft. Overtime, the sheath will lengthen causing the shaft to lose contact with the electric motor. When this happens, one side of both stops moving. If only one side fails, this causes the clamshell to twist and the red ball to break. In this scenario, you actually WANT the red ball to break because this is the cheapest part to replace. If the joint was solid, it is possible to :
a) snap the shaft ($30 if you have the new transmission, if not you have to buy a new transmission)
b) strip the transmission, $350 each side.
c) burn the motor, $100.

I would personally recommend against replacing the plastic joint with the metal joint. Usually, the plastic snaps for a reason. It doesn't just wear out.
