I have a 98 Boxster with 19,000 miles. I was driving the other day and I encountered a problem. When I wuold step on the gas peddle to go faster, the car would hesitate and bog down. At times I could not accelerate above 50 mph. I did put in Techron thinking that it may be an injector. However, the check engine light eventually came on. The car is now at the dealers and he tells me it may be the air mass sensor. Does anyone have any info about this and the possible cost to fix it. The dealer has not yet told me what the repair will cost. I am somwhat skeptical about this dealer but he his the only one in my area. Also, the SRS light has been on for a couple of months and he now says it is the seat belts. Is this worth fixing. This car is becoming a money pit. I am not sure if the seat belt issue needs to be resolved. Any suggestions?

The part is ~$275 and a VERY easy DIY. You can also start by attempting to clean it. I'm sure the dealer will charge $500-800. Check the archives here and over on PPBB.com for instructions.

Guess: $450.

I'll guess the dealer will charge about $450 for the repair. The part itself can be found online for under $300 (here's one I googled at a reputable place: http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/pp-996.606.123.00.htm), but the dealer price will be higher than that. Add 1 hour's labor for the work.

It's a simple DIY repair. You need a Torx security bit. If you've done it before you can swap out the part in under 10 minutes; if you haven't, it will take you longer to carefully figure out what you're doing as you access the MAF. Other people have had success cleaning the MAF instead of replacing it. I'm not sure how long it takes the CE light to turns off automatically after the MAF is cleaned or replaced.

It's easily accessible once you open the engine compartment.

Have had both as well

SRS light is still on and have quotes between $900.00 - $1100.00 to fix at the dealer. Have also been told the air bags will not work if the light is on. Air Mass Sensor was replaced at the dealer in the IE and it set me back about $800.00 and a couple hours of my time. Mine is a 99 - and although the repairs might be a bit costly, I still LOVE the car.

Good luck!

Just curious as to where you heard the airbags won't work as that disagrees with answers I have gotten from reputable individuals (dealer related) that are also Boxster owners.

The air bag light is on for a reason. Is the dealer quoting single fix or is he quoting the TSB to update the seat belt buckles and ground connections?

We fixed Tariq's air bag light by replacing only the bad buckle (see pic).

To clarify, I wasn't indicating that the system didn't need to be fixed. Rather, just trying to find out if a dealer or someone else is hinting doom and gloom that something is terribly wrong when it isn't the case.

I know the service departments are now pushing the airbag diagnostic checks as a "safety" precaution to make sure everything is working right. To me at least this seems like a very high profit inspection (it isn't cheap to have done) for something the computer should tell you via the idiot light. Admittedly though, I'm no expert in this area.

According to Peter Smith (20 plus years as a Porsche tech/shop foreman, and PCA Tech Committee) the air bag is still functional when the light is on. But as you said it still needs to be fixed.
