Hello Gang,
Recent Unfortunate turn of events with my 2000 Base Model 986.

One Cold Morning (and ever since) the clock display on my car has some random scrambling to the left of the clock.

The clock works and is illuminated well.
The scrambling resembles random dots, blobs, and curvy lines (which resemble a backwards " c " )
The scrambling is different every time and in the same general area.
The scrambling is orange (slightly brighter than the clock numbers.)
When the interior of the car is warm the scrambling appears smaller.

I will post some photos soon.
Any Thoughts anyone?

Thanks

In my experience, once an LCD display begins to behave strangely it's either a power issue or the display is kaput. Since the former is probably not likely to be the problem in this case then it probably means it's replacement time. Bummer.

Time for a replacement

I have attached a photo of my woes. The photo is a bit blurry. In real life you are able to clearly discern the individual dots. The shape of the blob has remained the same over the past few days, and no longer appears to be affected by temperature.

I have been checking Ebay for a replacement. Any other suggestions where to get a replacement?

Thanks Gang

Do you need to replace the entire cluster, or can you simply swap out the LCD unit for a new one? If the entire cluster needs replacement, I'd bet you'll also need to resync the new odometer to your mileage.

Thanks for the heads up on the S model. Unfortunately My cluster is black, this one is white. I do not need the whole cluster. I imagine one could swap out the fuel/temp/clock gauge without trouble.

Regards

Boxster Heal Thyself

Boxster Heal Thyself, or something like that. Since my original post to this thread the issue with my cluster has slowly began to resolve itself. Over time some of the errant dots/blips/blobs have begun to disappear. See before and after photo below.

I am still looking for an instrument cluster but hopefully it will continue to resolve itself and make my search a moot point.

RE: Boxster Heal Thyself

I just experienced almost exactly the same problem today with my 2000 S only the cluster of errant dots/blips/blobs are on the LCD right over the 10,000 digit on the odometer.

It has been cold and snowy here in Portland, OR for the past two weeks or so and today was the first day I started the car in about that amount of time.

Did your LCD eventually fix itself completely or did you end up having to replace it?

Thanks!

See everyone, these car's are sooo good they fix themselves!!!:p

I've seen this kind of thing happen wduring cold weather, or when the display has been pressed with a finger or cleaning cloth. It's always resolved itself over time as the liquid crystal warms up and is no longer up against the display screen...

JMMCFP You're Right!!

It took 6 months but it did resolve completely. I think the problem was moisture. The problem arose during a hard rain and slowly resolved over the next six months.

Here are the Photos

Attached are the photos. I'm glad the car healed herself
