Lately I have found myself to be really smitten by classic cars. I have always enjoyed them and when I was younger, my father had several Mustangs 66 Convertible, 65 coupe and 67 fastback. I know about the constant work and care that is required on classics (part of the fun for me) My issue is should I sell my car to fund my classic itch. I would be only interested in 67-69 Camaro convertible, 68-71 Mercedes 220-280 se convertibles or sedan, 66-72 911, 914 and that is about it. The MBZ have really been a passion for me as I have always drooled over the 280 SE convertibles. My Boxster has been a great car no issues runs strong and still gets loots of looks and compliments. Funny thing is as far as I'm concerned I have completed my mod list I don't want to do anything else to the car and all I do now is the maintenance which is not much. My car has only 43k on it. What realistically do you guys think I can get for it? Don't worry no ego here I know how soft the market has gotten on 986 and as far as the money I spent on mods I know is a loss. Here is a quick stats on my car 2000 986s Black on blk, rare options sprt design pkg, deviated color stitching and seat belts, aerokit 1, add on mods Litronics, 550 spyder taillights, navigation, champion rg5, ssk, eibach springs, stress bars mid and pedro lower, and a bunch of other little stuff that would just be a bonus should I sell????
 
I think the answer is... it depends.

If it's paid for I'd keep it and just start saving up to buy the other toys. That way you don't lose your investment on the mods and still have a nice, modern, car to drive around. If you still owe on it then there may be no downside to getting rid of it other then the losses associated with the cost of the upgrades.
 
Thats another thing, the car is paid for and the bad side is the value just keeps going down. I have been following the classics and their values tends to be more flat and if you buy right it actually tends to go up...I'm not really doing it for "investment" purposes just more of the enjoyment. Which goes back to I still enjoy driving the Boxster... decisions, decisions, decisions...
 
The Camaro convertible and the early 911s you mentioned are going up and good ones are not cheap. The 914 on the other hand is affordable. Check the August Excellence for 10 Porsches to invest in now.

I don't follow the MBs, BUT....

You could probably put the Box up for collateral on a loan to buy a really decent 914. Before they go up too much.
 
Vintage Purchase

The other thing to consider is what Tom kind of hit on above---the reliability of your Box will far outperform most any vintage car. I had a 1970 Triumph TR6 for years, frame on restoration, but I was limited to a tight radius for motoring distance because it was an old car. I really loved tooling around with the car, the smell, the vintage experience, but I didn't go ANWHERE without my tool kit.

I also have a 2000S and wouldn't give it up---it's a great combo of enthusiast motoring and an elegant driving experience.

I will buy your rims! I really like the look of them. Where did you get them?

I'm looking for a nice set of similar looking rims but refuse to pay the $6000 Canadian that the Porsche dealer quoted for the Sport Classic 2's.
 
just sold a '74 2.0L that I took about 1.5 years doing a resto/mod.

stock body with a 2056 motor, trick suspension bits and 914-6GT style seats.
lots of goodies on that one.

I decided to go to a more modern/comfortable car and have been wanting a nice 964 C2 for years now...
so out with the old and in with the slightly newer:D

I also thought about an early Nova SS and a '64 Malibu SS, but decided I wanted something a bit more comfortble and daily drivable.

I had a similar dilema, restore or buy new. A 914 isn't quite a "classic", but I couldn't pass up the pluses of a newer, more reliable P-car. We eventually sold the 914. :(

Are you going to be a/x your 964?

What are your thoughts on the handling differences between your old 986 vs. 914 vs 964? Nice 964 by the way...

Yes I sold the Puttputt....and it was my AX car....

I will be AXing the 964, at first in stock form and later, as I collect parts, it will have a similar suspension to a Euro RS.

they are all very different animals, the 914 is like a roller skate, the Boxster like a much larger, heavier 914 and the 964...........well it is a "tail dragger" so we all know what that entails.

I have wanted a 964 for many years. I think it is the best of the original body shelled 911s. I have had two Carreras in the past an '84 and an '87.
the 911 will take bigger tires front and rear and more suspension to get to where the 914 was...but that is all part of the fun for me. The project is half the fun.:D
