My car has been prompting me to get "Service now". With my warranty about to expire I made an appointment at Michael Stead Porsche in Walnut Creek.

Dropped it off this morning to have a look. I have been getting infrequent warnings about the spoiler and the drivers side seatbelt doesn't retract very well. Plus if there were any recall orders out there those could be taken care of. So, I just got a call. They want $645 for the 20,000 mile service which includes an oil and filter change and some cabin filter change. Don't know what that is. I told this gal I will do my own oil change so how much less would the service be without that? She said they'd knock off about 60-80 bucks. I said, wow, I thought oil changes were around 2 or 3 hundred bucks. She said they only do oil changes as part of a Periodic Service. Any thoughts on this?

Get your oil changed at the upcoming Car Care Day in March at Porsche of Fremont. You can probably get the other stuff looked at on the same day. The cabin filter change is definitely a DIY thing. You may be able to get a special price for a complete service as well - at least they've done so in the past.

Thanks, Tom. Thing is I always seem to miss out on those Care Care Days and I want to make sure I get the care looked at before the Warranty expires. I don't know the exact date of the expiration but leaning towards May. But I have a lot going on the next couple months and worry I'll miss any specific scheduled Fremont Day. Rock and a hard place situation. :(

Update. I just couldn't see spending $675 for the 20,000 mile service. Essentially, all they are doing is an oil and filter change. Cabin filer change. Check tires and brakes. Check for faults. They say it's about 3.5 hours. I'm not a total cheap skate but that just seems like a lot of dough for very little actual work. I already have oil. I have a Griots low profile jack. I just need the filter wrench and I can do the oil change myself. Don't know what this cabin filter is they are referring to. I imagine it's part of the HVAC system.

Filter Location

At least on a 987, the cabin filter is accessed through the front trunk, under the panel that covers the passenger side upper strut tower. The attached diagram should help (the filter itself is labeled 2). The one in the Boxster is much easier to replace than in most cars I've owned!

You've got that right. On my Infiniti I had to tear apart the glove box just to get to the filter housing. This process required disassembly of the bottom part of the dash on the passenger side and took about 30 minutes. The whole process on the Boxster takes about 2 minutes if you're slow!

The Cayenne's is also behind the glove compartment.
Takes a good 20-30 minutes to replace because it's in a very uncomfortable place to access.
Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

Its sounds like to me all I would have them do is check for faults. Everything else can be easily done in an afternoon. As for checking tires and brakes - sounds like to me a good time to take each tire off and check the wear on the pads and bleed the brake system at the same time - very easy. If you don't have a power bleeder - go to pelican parts order a power bleeder, oil filter, oil drain plug washer, cabin filter, oil filter wrench, air filter and a 6pk of cold beer and have at it!! All the parts added up plus shipping around $130 or so. Save your money and bond with your boxster - I can't wait for Spring!!:)

Well, I just had them check for faults and I also asked about any recalls. The "Service Now" light still comes on upon start up so at some point I have to have that cleared. I'll pick up some parts and I'll do the work myself. Seems March is the end of my Warranty. :(

Pelican Parts?

Cannot they clear the service light under warranty or are they not going to do that unless they actually know the service is done? That would drive me crazy. Bob // Colorado

Guess thats the answer. But one quick flick of the column lever on the left and it's gone until the next time I start the car. Gonna try real hard to make it to that Car Care Day in Fremont.

20K service for $150

I just did a 20K service, really just oil and filter change, for $150 at Carlsen Porsche. They did send me a coupon via mail. Maybe you should call them up and see if they will offer you the same price?

Is there no way to clear the service light without a dealer doing it for you? I was planning on doing my own maintenance.
