My mechanic is encouraging me to install a Fab Speed after market cold air intake and exhaust system on my Boxster. A good friend of mine, who has driven Porsches all his driving life, agrees that it would be a good investment. Fact is they are expensive the complete outfit with headers is over $5K about half of what I paid for the car. The second system does not have headers and is half that price but gives me about 7 HP less. Has anyone here installed an after market exhaust system on their Boxster and what were the results? Are you happy with it and do you think it was a wise investment? Any thoughts on Fab Speed? Thanks in advance for the input.

Hi,

welcome to the forum.
Not trying to be rude, but do a search on this forum and 986forum for:
* fabspeed
* GHL
* Billy Boat
* cold air intake

and you'll find lots of opinion and facts.
You will also see many discussions if investing thousands of $$$ is worth a relatively small gain in hp...

Cheers

I put an air intake, chip upgrade and aftermarket exhaust on my Cayman (2007 S) and while it did add some HP. (It went up about 15HP on the Dyno) The differnce was not all that apparent when driving. The biggest change was sound. At WOT it was awsome but there was a drone between 2500 and 3000 RPM that was pretty annoying. (The exhaust was a Miltek system)
Given the amount of $ spent (around 3.5K for the lot) I'm not sure I would do it again.

I wish I had 5k to spend on after market exhaust. ;) If it were me, I would take that 5k and invest in some DE events and auto-x (and the tires it requires). If you are looking for a more aggressive sound, you may want to consider a low cost alternative - the CSE:

Believe me there is no way I would spend the $5K+ for that system, I was looking more at the $2.5K system that didn't include headers but I've read through all the posts on this topic and have come away with the opinion that the guy who removes the baffles in the muffler at Sportech does the most good for the least amount of money and the resonance between 2K-3K RPM is not included. As for the cold air intake it looks like the K&N filter I had installed, instead of the stock one, has pretty much the same results as a $600 cold air intake system.

ChrisZ and I both have the SPORTECH gutted mufflers.
I don't know about Chris, I like mine. It sounds good.

Sportech

Thanks for the tip on Sportech I had a verynice conversation with them today and I'm convinced it is the way to go. For $690 they'll swap out my system in about three hours and their dyno has indicated an 11 HP increase with no resonance. One of the many things I enjoy about my Boxster is the sound it makes and I really didn't want to screw it up. They also recommended the de-snorkeling that I looked into here but all the photo's are not appearing on the post so I couldn't tell where this snorkle is located. If there is a newer post with pics I'd appreciate a link.

i had a ghl exhaust but had to take that off after about a week of driving it due to the annoying resonnance. on my car now i have the dansk sausage looking muffler and love it. beautiful tone and no resonance and vibration that the ghl had. cost me about $500 on ebay...

Mike any noticeable HP increase? What year is your Box and do you have Tiptronic?

I'd worry more about resonance than HP increases. It appears that most, if not all, of these aftermarket exhausts make little horsepower, and usually it's at the expense of some low end torque. I think the bigger issue is resonance. I've seen some people go through three aftermarket exhausts in the elusive search for one without resonance. If you want it LOUD, you're going to have to live with some resonance too and that can be pretty hard to live with.

There are a few that don't have resonance - stock, PSE, Danske, and Gemballa (I have the Gemballa). It sounds like maybe the Sportech mod would make this list too. I would seriously consider those options if the resonance drone is a serious issue. My 911 has the Fabspeed by-pass pipes (no muffler at all) and it sounds GREAT around town, especially with the windows down. But on the highway, with the windows up, my ears will start to bleed. :p I've heard the Boxster resonance drone can be just as bad, if not worse.

Here is my econo race exhaust system

$99 Stainless Steel headers from ebay
Custom made Sportec Cat bypass made from parts from Midas Mufflers
$450 Stainless steel race muffler

Race system that uses all stock mounting points for under $1000. ..Not reccomended for those who dont use ear protection.:p

Kirk I must ask a question then, and I'm not trying to be rude so please don't take it that way I'm just trying to understand what if anything I may be spending money on. Question: if there is little or no HP increase in these exhaust systems why spend upwards of thousands of dollars on them? I really enjoy the sound of my Boxster as it is and was looking for a HP increase without creating a loud monster that drives me nuts. I also have an extended warranty that is voided if I change exhaust systems but my mechanic would keep my stock and change them out for an inspection if I needed the warranty as long as I buy from him. The Sportech is appealing because it looks just like stock. Are you saying I'm just spending money on sound either way?
