G'day fellow porsche people :D
I am new to Babblers...what a great idea!!!

I have an issue with the drivers side window not going down the little bit that it normally would when you go to close the door/ It will go down if you hold the door handle up, as soon as you release it goes up and hits the plastic edge around the door:eek:

Any ideas on how to resolve this before I take it to the Porsche Centre and part with a months wages:rolleyes:

Cheers :D

That's typically a worn out window regulator. You can do it yourself if you're handy. You'll need a 10mm socket, 13mm socket, 4mm allen, T20 torx, T30 torx, and a phillips screw driver. If you take it to a dealer expect to pay about $500 or so. The regulator itself is $230 but you might be able to find a cheaper one online.

Thanks for the info...it's nice to know what to expect! I could build a house but not so confident about taking the door off my car to pieces???

Could be regulator.... but seems too new (2002) to be worn enough.

So, it could also be the "microswitch" that I think controls the little movement you're talking about.

#996-613-125-00 left
#996-613-126-00 rt

@ $20 each.

reference: PET group 8 SG 04, illustration 804-20 page 1&2.

it is a bugger to get in there to replace, but doable I believe.

Thanks KJ:)
The references that you have given- are they to a manual? If so where do I get the one you are talking about. I am happy to cautiously give it a go!

Cheers:D

I've got a home copy, but I'll send you to a site (dismantler) that displays this stuff.

the pages look fuzzy, but click on the diagrams and it expands and gives item descriptions. Click on "body" and then, "doors"....

The illustration page is as listed in my previous comments. Maybe you can take this information to a dealer and confirm that the microswitch is the likely suspect.

good luck,

kj

The "test" to see if it's a bad regulator is to grab the glass with both hands and give it a good yank up and down. If you get about a centimeter of play then you need a new regulator. 2002 is not too new to require a new regulator. I've had to replace them on cars much newer than that.

You're right!

... for me, semantics. You're referring to the regulator motor, right and I thought you originally meant the channels (out of alignment, etc).

I just visited my local dealer as I'm having a second occurrance of driver window glitches and asked if it could be the micro-switch - no, was the answer.. most likely the regulator motor, he said. I think the brains of the 'drop down' feature are part of that unit, not the micro-switch.

The dealer said it wouldn't be too bad, only about $600! Looks like I'll be getting into the door panel too.... but, at least I've demo'd a few with the SpecBoxster group builds.

The regulator and the motor are separate pieces that are replaced individually. The window motor rarely fails but the regulator is pretty common. I could take about $200 off the dealership price if you don't feel like doing it yourself :-)

Okay Alden,

I'm now officially confused. Can you explain for me the difference in the attached JPG which parts we're referring to? I had thought that the regulator was the channel that allowed the window to slide up and down - guess not.

I also had believed that the regulator motor contained the feature that let the window dip ~1/4" when opening the doors. How are you separating the two items? Is a 'regulator' attached to the motor body and is actually two separate components? I've only seen them sold as one unit.

any help?

thanks

kj

In that picture number 1 is the regulator and number 2 is the motor. The motor bolts to the regulator with 3 13mm bolts. On some cars you can buy the motor and regulator together but most of the time they are sold separately. On 986s I don't think I've ever replaced a window motor. On those cars the motor is a slave and dips when the microswitches are activated or with the normal window switch. On 987s the window motor is also the door control unit. I've replaced several motors on 987s for a variety of issues. Generally on 986s if the window does not dip it is because there is slack in the cables of the regulator so when the motor tries to dip the window it doesn't dip far enough. The regulator does include the channels that guide the glass but it also has gears, pulleys, and cables to physically move the window. The window motor turns the cables in the regulator.

Are you bringing the 944 to the last GGR Autox this Sat?

Thanks for taking the time to explain some things

Had my left window regulator replaced at Sonnen Mill Valley $568.00

Unfortunately I won't be at the autocross. I have a bunch of family flying in for the holiday.
