While reversing out of a parking space, the front spoiler must have been slightly over the parking block. It looks like the little eyes in the spoiler where it mounts may be damaged. How ca I tell whether the spoiler can be remounted? Does this require a body shop, or is a decent P-car mechanic suited to remount? Is this the kind of thing I could do myself - looks complicated!

Did it get pulled all the way off when backing out or did you remove it the rest of the way?

If all the mounting points are damaged it will be more work depending on the extent of the actual damage. The good news is that the R&R is a DIY job as many owners do it as part of cleaning the radiators so there's lots of documentation available (try renntech or a google search). The other option would be to replace the nose with a different style if the existing one is beyond repair from a cost standpoint.

I see you're in Walnut Creek so if you ever come near Campbell I'd be happy to take a look at it for you and let you know if it's beyond repair or not. You certainly don't have to go to a body shop unless you're going to get it painted.

Thanks guys for the info. Very glad to hear that mounting this is something I can tackle myself. How can I tell if it can be remoounted (BTW I am actually in Sac, no longer in WC)?

Should I be talking to a body shop about whether it is in good enough shape to be repaired? I see a couple eye holes that are damaged. The spoiler was pulled completely off the car in the parking lot.

Thanks!

There's no harm in remounting it to see how solid it is but if it pulled completely off then all of the mounting locations are probably damaged to some degree. Take a look at the R&R instructions to locate all the places with screws and go from there.

no worries, it is very easy... just make sure all the fasteners are there.
if not, then order them from pelicanparts.com

see if these two images make any sense to you.

Thanks all for the helpful info. My main concern at the moment is that the mounting points of this spoiler are too far damaged to remount. Here is a link to a few pics; please especially note the two pics of the car which show that a chunk of the spoiler is still on the car and appears to be kind of "ears" that got torn right off the spoiler.

Looking at the price of spoilers (discounted maybe 600 ish new w/o paint), I would really like to use this one again. But I just don't think in its present condition that's realistic. I would like to get a professional assessment of whether any repairs or modifications could be done to make it mountable, but not sure who can advise me on that?

Because of the breakage at the corners of the wheel wells I'm guessing you will need a replacement. The other spots where things just ripped out would probably be OK if you used washers in addition to the normal screws.

It would seem like you could find a black spoiler of a similar vintage w/o too much trouble these days and avoid the need to paint. Have you checked craigslist and ebay?

Hi Tom, I am checking both craigslist and ebay every day. No luck yet. There are some after market choices that offer no interesting value to me, so hoping to find something cheap and workable. I also am surprised that there are so few choices on ebay. I recall a period when ebay seemed littered with variants of these things.

Do you know which years of 996 would fit?

How about Parts Heaven?

And I think Dan meant 1998-2001 911 nose- it would be pretty curious to have a 1991 911 nose on a Boxster! :D

He he there must be a way to get a 1991 911 nose on there somehow! jk

I checked parts heaven, best so far at $475 + repaint.

There is a pcar salvage yard in L.A. that will sell for $350 and "50 or 60" to ship it up, but they won't "guarantee color." Quoted $500 to paint by reputable body shop. Sure hope I can find a black one!

You might also check with a few of the local dealers to see if they've got any laying around.

Two news items:

#1 A local body shop that is very Pcar friendly and knowledgeable has determined they can repair and reinstall the bumper cover! The owner was candid in that it wasn't the proper fix, but they could make some repairs and get me back on the road. Dropped car off this afternoon. Hoping to have it back this weekend.

#2 Seriously pounded the phone today seeking bumpers all over the Western half of the country. Got some great referrals from independent repair shops (including IPB in Sac, Valhalla in Lafayette, and S Car Go). Spoke directly with a good handful of guys that seemed to know their pcar parts. Boxster bumper covers are available, but few and far between. 911 covers are even harder to come by.

Fingers crossed for the weekend!
