Started up my 2000 Boxster this morning to find out the LED backligt on Speedo is out. The other two LED's work fine and mechanical speedo is a good backup. Does anyone know if the LED backlight is replaceable or does the whole thing need replacing?

Thanks Tom, this does help. Does anyone know if I will have to replace gauge or can I service the light bulb? Also, where do I buy one... not in any of the catalogs.

The bulbs are two different wattages as I recall based on the color coding and the easiest place to get a replacement is from a dealer. If you don't have a dealer handy you can always do mail order from Sunset (Oregon) or Suncoast (Florida). Either should also be able to tell you the right part number.

From the PET it looks like is should be 996.631.302.90

Tom,

that diagram is for a 2003 which has the VDO gauge
I believe the 2000 model still has the "old style" gauge which was made by a different part supplier and all the inner workings are completely different

Yes and I checked my workshop manual, the replaceable bulbs are for the analog guages connected with when the headlights are on. My problem is the digital speedo (and outside temperature) LCD display. The same went out on my radio and I was advised that the light was not replaceable and I had to replace the entire radio. I am afraid I might have to replace the digital speedo also. It still works as I can see the numbers move faintly with sunlight but the backlight is out. If anyone has had this same experience would love to hear what you did to fix. I am going to call my local dealer but afraid of what I might hear. Thanks

You are right, Chris. I misread the original post as being the main gauge backlight and not the LED display itself. I think he may be out of luck on the LED portion and it will take a more expensive fix.

You may want to check over at renntech.org to see if there are any other ideas on this if Loren doesn't check in here first.

I actually have two "old style" 996 clusters which are in parts (I bought them mistakenly believing I could use them for my MY 2002 car - big mistake)
One is almost complete the other one has several parts missing, you could either salvage the parts to repair your cluster or you could upgrade to a 996 cluster by merging your existing 986 cluster with the parts of the clusters I have
I am willing to let them go at a very reasonable price
Let me know if you're interested, and I can give you an exact description of the two clusters

I sent you two e-mail last week, not sure if you got them
In any case the items are now in the classifieds section

Good news... for me and anyone else that encounters this problem. Yes, the bulb is replaceable. Dealer wants $15 for a new bulb, bought the same OE Osram bulb from AutoHaus for 93 cents. All is right with the world.
