Hi everyone. I'll be lurking here for awhile to learn as much as possible about Boxsters, with a possible future purchase in mind. I'll try not to butt in too much...

LOL You sound like a kindred spirit. :D

Welcome. This is a good place to learn. When and what are you thinking about purchasing?

Welcome! Are you sure you really want to buy a "chic" car?;)

I didn't know that the coolest Porsche was considered a "chic car". ;)

I'm in the process of pruning my fleet. I've got two cars and two motorcycles to sell before I start looking in earnest...actually, one car and two bikes. I just sold my '09 Challenger R/T this last week. Anyway, I feel like I'm ready to own another convertible as I haven't had one in 39 years. That one was my first new car, a '73 FIAT 850 Spyder. This time around, if I don't end up with another Corvette, I'd be looking for a lightly-used Boxster S.

I've been lurking this forum and a couple of others for a few weeks now, and maybe my impressions are out to lunch, but it seems to me as though Boxsters may have a bit more than their fair share of mechanical problems. I hope I'm wrong as they are an interesting design for sure, but I once owned a Renault R5 and that's all that could be said for that car...

All forums are more full of problems than praise because the vast majority of owners are out enjoying their cars and not posting messages. Plus it is spring (or almost) and cars are coming out of hibernation and that is a time when things get done or problems are discovered. I'd also guess that Porsche people post more and do more of the work themselves because they are so passionately involved with their cars.

A Vette and a Boxster are two very good but different cars. You should know within a mile or so which is for you.

Here's a link for an explanation (and some chuckles). http://www.babblers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12553

Great link! Your comment about snobbery was right on. The whole concept of a "chick car" is really almost sexism...is a car less macho just because women like it too? If so, it implies that there is either something inferior about women in general, or about their tastes or preferences in cars. Call me a flake, but I've always thought women were pretty cool. I even married one that has great taste in cars...and men! :D

I zeroed in on the Boxster over the 911 Cab for two reasons: 1) Most importantly, I've never been able to get past the 911 Cab's looks. The top-down "humped back" just looks goofy to my eye. It's too obvious that the 911 design was originally intended to be a coupe rather than a roadster...JMO. And 2) A 911 Cab is WAY out of my price range, though I might find a way to make it work anyway if it wasn't for reason #1. Add in the engine placement and, well...as I said, my first new car (the FIAT) was rear engined. My second new car replaced that 850 Spyder. It was a mid-engined '74 FIAT X1/9. Need I dwell on which one had better handling? I know that cubic time and development have finally made the 911 a good handling car, but...

Boxster not a chick car

Unless you get some of the extra equipment picture here.

You have to admit some resemblance in the body design....

The 911 is a family car -- it's perfect for picking up your kids.

The 986 is a chick car -- it's perfect for picking up chicks.

Great quote, Peer! My wife may have issues with it, although the fact that she owned a 914 when we met cemented the 986 purchase 15 years into our marriage. We've had a blast on weekend drives and met a lot of wonderful people thanks to the Boxster!
