Does a 2001 996 bumper cover for a 1998 986?

Hi everyone,
Wondering if the following would fit on my 1998 986. This bumper was taken off of a 2001 996 C2. I spoke to a few body shop guys and they had no clue, only saying that there is something different with the part that the bumper cover bolts on to ("the real bumper").

They couldn;t tell me what the difference was although they did say that the "design" of the bumper cover fits. Its just that they don;t know if it will bolt onto the real bumper or something to that point.

I thought I'd rather get this forum's expert advice: Here's the link to the bumper on EBAY:

Seller is also selling some sort of a bumper insert. Not sure if I need that too. Here's the link to that. Hope I can get some good advice!

Try over on "Renntech.org for techincal assistance

I am sure it works but I would check there for sure. :D

Thanks Dan!
Spent an hour researching on Renntech without much luck. Was there a specific post that you came across that you could remember? I tried every key term till I only used the word "bumper".
I hope it works too...not sure why the autoshop guy said it wouldn't work.....

If it's the same body style then I believe it should fit as a bolt-on. The only gotcha would be if you needed an S bumper cover. In that case you need a cover from a 996 with a Tiptronic to have the center opening. Since your car is a '98 that's not a worry for you.

I have read several threads about folks doing just that type of switch.
the only thing you would need to be aware of is the different types of headlights the 996s changed to...as long as you get a bumper from a 996 that had the same headlights as your Boxster then there should be no problem.
If you can't find the thread on renntech then just ask the question over there. Jeff (toolpants) or Loren are the two moderators and they are good at answering all sorts of questions. :p

links

The ebay links don't seem to work. I'd like to know what it looks like.

Interchanging 99-01 996 and 97-04 986 headlights work almost perfectly. Seems like a ton of people do the 996 C2 bumper swap on the Boxster.

If anyone has a "spare" GT3 or Turbo bumper laying around, you know who to contact. ;)

the link doesn't work

i do know '99-'01 bumpers WILL fit the boxster. the 996 facelift began in '02 and wont fit because of the headlights.

i think if you are going to change the bumper than go for something more aggressive like the gt3 bumper. i fitted a 996 aerokit I/gt3 mkI front bumper to my '98 boxster. it fit perfectly with no special adjustments.

Thanks for all your help! Auction will end in 8 hours - definitive answer needed

Thank you to all the great forum members so far for your help. It looks as if everyone is in agreement that this would work.....

I've attached the pictures that the guy sent me...What do you guys think? I wish toolpants could help now!

Jimmy

The removal and installation is actually straightforward - if not a bit time consuming. The trickiest part is getting the screws on the sides back in if you don't remove the wheel well liners.

This link explains how to remove the bumper cover and replace it. While you're at it you can also do the part about cleaning the radiators ;)

PS - It looks like the bumper that's for sale also has a Boomerang installed. It's up to you if you want to leave it on or not as there are convincing arguments on both sides.

Thanks Tom

Thanks for the advice Tom.

I'm assuming I'll need the insert has well correct? I know the 986 bumper cover doesn't have one but I'm assuming that in order for the 996 C2 bumper to fit, I'd need the insert. In looking at the parts manual, it looks like the insert fits onto the bumper and NOT the bumper frame? Am I correct to assume this?

Attached is the pic.

Part number for the 996 insert is : 996 505 553 04

Thanks,
Jimmy

From that picture it looks like it doesn't have a center opening. Since you don't have an S, meaning a 3rd radiator, then it would be OK. If you had an S then you'd need one with a center opening (from a C2 w/a Tiptronic).
