I am wondering how interested people would be in purchasing a 1997 Porsche Boxster, 5 speed, 83,XXX miles, Sport Package, optional 17inch "turbo twist looking" wheels, brand new top, Rare Blue Turquoise color, Black interior, and in very good condition. The car looks just like the one in this picture:

What do you think is a good price for the car? Please help me out! Thanks.

It's very hard to say without knowing the options and condition. Will it pass a PPI? Were there RMS issues?

Four things are going to work against you on the value of this car:

1. 1997 is the first year of the boxster, and the boxster just gets better with each model year. That means that the only people considering '97s are those for whom price is a siginificant factor.
2. Turquois blue is not rare because everyone loves the color.
3. Winter is coming. The market for convertibles shrinks as the rain starts falling and the nights get cold. You might be able to do better if you wait until spring.
4. The miles aren't high in an absolute sense. Only about 11K a year is pretty good for normal cars, but there are a lot of '97 and '98s out there with 1/2 or 2/3 the mileage.

So I think the original responder has a solid handle on the range of value, but you'll only see the high-side of that if it's absolutely pristine-glow-in the dark and with every maintenance record from day one taped to the windshield. That means brand-new tires and no signs of wear anywhere. You're much more likely to see the middle of that range. Thats my guess anyway.

All that said, I'm in the market for boxster and would at least look at yours. I'm afraid I'll be just like the typical person who would consider your car though--hoping for something better and newer and only willing to pull the trigger if both the car and the deal is really solid.

Thanks for the comments!

Wow! $10-15k? Have you guys seen any Boxsters go to $10k that haven't been through a fire or collisions? I would run out and buy a Boxser for $10k in good condition; even for $13k! (<-- Notice I said "in good condition")

What is PPI? What are those tests gallileo asked about? The car passes smog and recently had the tires replaced, along with an alignment.

In terms of options, my Boxster has the options that I listed in my first posting. There is a trip computer that I use pretty often now, due to the high gas prices and I TRY not to step on the gas too much! :)
Also, I'm thinking about putting an Aero Kit (Maybe a Turbo or GT2) on the car. How would that affect peoples' interest and also the value? (Of course, if I did that, i'd probably keep the car for at least another year.)

i'm confused by your questions. do you own the car? do you want to sell it?

ppi = pre-purchase inspection

www.edmunds.com puts the value of this car at 16,500 for good condition. The only thing is, edmunds is always high. The reason its always high is that it is only updated quarterly from data that is already a quarter old. So by the time you see it, it's six months out of date.

And convertibles do lose value in the winter, just because there are fewer people looking to buy.

I don't see many asking prices for good condition boxsters for less than $15,000, but the asking doesn't tell you much.

Right now there are six 1997 boxsters for sale in the bay area listed on craigslist, for between $17,000 and 21,000. All of them have lower milage than yours. Four of them have been for sale for more than three weeks. If they have been for sale that long, then people aren't paying the asking price.

The $17,000 one has been for sale for three weeks and started out at $19,000. My money says he will just repost his ad next week.

There are four 1998 boxsters on craigslist from $14,600 to $24,000. I have driven the $14,600. He's been advertising that sucker for a while now too, and it hasn't moved, and it ain't gonna move until he drops it much, much further.

Maybe you'll have better luck. But the market for performance cars is soft at the moment.

Clarify

Yes, I own the Boxster. I was just commenting that if I saw a Boxster for $10k and in good condition, I'd go buy another one.

I paid $17,900.00 last month for a pristine, dealer maintained, original owner 1998 Boxster with 47K and new tires. I have the "P63" Sport Package (396 17" Wheels/Tires, M551 Wind stop, M490 Sound system, M454 Cruise control, M535 Alarm system, and M688 CD player in dash) If you have the trip computer I think you have the "Sport Touring Package" which may be worth a little more on resale but not much. I have the original window sticker, all Porsche dealer service records etc. I had another Porsche dealer inspect it and there are no oil leaks or any other problems. I looked at several 1997 to 2000 Boxsters and price was not my main objective. In order, I was looking for 1. Original owner, 2. "Babied' 3. Dealer maintained, 3. Under 50K, 4. Garaged, 5. Price, 6. All Keys, Manuals etc. In other words I would have paid more for the "perfect" car. The cheapest Boxster I drove was a 1998 for $15,888. (asking) and it easily needed $2,000.00 worth of work but only had 52K on it. If your car is in "pristine" condition I would put the value at about $14,000.00 to $15,000.00 based on what I looked at over the past few months. I did not see any in the $10 to $13K range. Good luck.

I bought a 98 after loking for quite a while; $14-16 range depending on condition is a reasonable range in the LA area. Never mind the $10k from the first response he was either trying to be sarcastic -don't see why considering you are asking for help- or he ment a salvage title car.
Rolando

nope, i wasn't being sarcastic, and i didn't mean a salvage title. i still think that the $10-15k range is a reasonable response to "what do you think is a good price for the car" $10k is a "good" price for a buyer and $15k is a "good" price for a seller, and there are 100 other factors that affect final selling price. since the owner isn't even sure if he wants to sell it, a good price to the seller may be $20k and he may get it if he finds the right buyer.

sounds ok

Thanks... everyone seems to have some good insight and point of views.
Yeah, I would never sell my Boxster for $10k in the condition that it's in.

Would adding an aero kit change anything in terms of interest and/or the price people are willing to pay?... even a couple years down the line?

I suspect it would limit the pool of prospective buyers and doubt it would increase the value equal to the additional cost.

Still Thinking Out Loud

Thanks... from the sounds of it, I might put an aero kit on my car and just keep the Boxster until it drives to the ground... I forgot to mention that it has a hardtop too... I'm still considering selling it though... I may change my mind by the time spring rolls along. :)

Usually how many miles do these babies go up to?

The aero kit, just as many other options, would not increase the value of the car proportionally to its cost. For example a hardtop costs about $3k at the dealer, $1.5K or less on ebay but according to the blue book only increases the value of the car by $500 (same thing with premium wheels).

True

That's true... I guess that's why so few people get the Aero kit... If only there was someone selling a used kit and it just happened to be Blue Turquoise... that would be perfect.

Has anyone seen another blue turquoise Boxster in Northern Cali? I've only seen one other Porsche with the same color, but it was the older style Porsche. I've grown to like the color a lot. If there was another one for sale with something like 15k miles, I'd be tempted to buy it. :)
