OK, I know most of you Boxster drivers would rather drive around with the top down and a Latte in the cup holder...

but some of you want to really drive your car....the countdown to the first AX of the season has started.

March 15. new venue on runway #725 at Alameda Naval Air Station (point)

lets see what you guys (and gals) have.:D

Don't do it!...

... try to outrun Dan's "puttputt". Just come on out and enjoy watching him smoke everyone this year. He says "puttputt", but he says it with a big grin.

: (

I will be in san diego for the SCCA Nat Tour in a GTi.

I can't wait for my first PCA event. I am even getting some new magnets made for my class : )

I really wanted to make the first event, but oh well. I am pretty sure I can make April.

Real Boxsters don't have cupholders ;)
Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

thanks Ken, but I am sure I will still be seeing your tail lights:D

I should be there.

Do I have to open my car 100% or could I go somewhat easy on it at 80-90% until I get comfortable?

you go as slow or fast as you are comfortable with:eek:

after a lap or two, you will forget about the 80%

At the drivers meeting they will ask for newbies and who wants an instructor.
You will want an instructor if you want to get the most out of your experience.:D

You won't be the only one running at 80-90%. I plan on being there for my first AX ever - - - so you'll have some competition for slowest Boxster around the course! I bought a helmet this weekend, so I'm all set to go!

I'm going to try to make it.

My 1st auto-x in the boxster! My 1st auto-x in many years!

I hope to install the 17"s instead of my stock 19"s.

Looking forward to it.

I'm glad to see you guys are going to take a whack at it. I wouldn't recommend more than 80% for the whole morning. Actually, it can be very satisfying at any range YOU'RE comfortable with. I hope you take advantage of the instructors available too. I'm still calling for certain people to ride along and point out my bad habits or mistakes.... and I had my first instructor when I was 55 when I got reacquainted with AX after a long absence.

There are quite a few facets to this game, many mental and many physical - just like flying in a way... the instructor doesn't hand you the aircraft for the first time and say - land it down there. He hands you the yoke - now make slow left and right turns, then something else to deal with. The AX instructors will first help with the course layout - where to go, then, when more comfortable, work on another aspect - perhaps which lines are more efficient, then other stuff. So, there's no need for apprehension or feeling pressure - this is truly intended to be fun!

Is it better to A/X on my current rear tires that is down to the wear line and possibly a little more(maybe 10% left if that, (the fronts are about 50%) or put brand new rear tires on that will have less than 300miles on it at time of A/X? (fronts will still be the same) Do tires have a break in period?

if your rear tires are that thin, there is always the chance you could *Cord* them and then you would have to go home without finishing the day.:(
I would suggest you get some new rear tires....
Street tires really aren't going to be better or worse brand new.
Besides you will have some miles on them anyway, so they won't be "stickers":D

That reminds me of a warning a tire installer gave me back when I was auto-xing my old car.

He said not to race the car right away (that day -- i guess) because the lube they put on the rim/tire could make the tire come off!?! That would not be fun!

Rim Slippage

The tires coming off would be interesting

Even if the tires don't come off, it is very easy for them to slip on the rim necessitating a re-balance. Also, depending on who you talk to, new tires are a bit slippery for the first ~500 miles as the mold release compound burns off.

I'm in the same situation with my tires, good tread on the front, poor tread on the rear. I will have new tires installed at custom alignment the Monday after the first A/X, giving me a month to break them in before the next A/X.

As Dan mentions, you may cord the tires and have to drop out, but I'm prepared to do that since I'm not going for the fastest time. If I can get a few good runs in and learn more about the car and how to A/X, I'll achieve my goals and have a great experience :)

Hi Dan and Ken,

I have been looking forward to the start of the series. But, I will miss the first one. I have to teach class that day. :( Is this a different running than we have used before, hopefully is longer and wider.

Have fun, wish I was there.

vic

Hey Victor....:D

the runway we are using is much longer......over 2X longer, but it is about 1/2 as wide. So we will have some interesting courses. It should be fine once we actually see what we have in the flesh.

see you at #2.

helmet question

Not sure if I should start a new thread, but it is in preparation for this auto-x. . .

Helmet question,

Is my helmet useable?

it has Snell SA 90 rating, manufact date of 10/94

No major scratches etc.

thanks

must have a Snell 95 or newer. SA or M are both OK. Snell 2000 highly recommended.:)

We have many loaner helmets, so if you do not have a chance to pick up a new one, we have you covered.
Just make sure to get to the site fairly early. since if we have lots of newbies, they go pretty quickly.
