15 more miles to the elusive 1500 mile break in period. I've already put it thru a number of good turns but can't wait to see how she pulls in the upper RPM's. I told my wife to have bail money ready for tommorrow, she just gave me the look!

Ok, i have not yet taken possesion of my 987s, hopefully the dealership will finish whatever the heck it is they need to do. Anyways, this is the first I have heard you have to keep the RPM's under 55k for the frist 1500 miles...ouch, i am so disappointed. I was looking forward to getting my car and seeing if the boxster s will outrun a police interceptor. lol (no joking)

Well, this will break your heart then. My owner's manual states the break in extends for 2,000 miles and not to exceed 4,200 rpm. This is for a 6- speed 2006 987S (3.2 engine). And yes, the wait is killin' me cuz' I don't want to take it out in the rain. And it rains a LOT more up here in Roseville than it did in Riverside! The manual, dated 6/05, goes on to say it is best to break in with longer trips, probably to get it up to temperature with fewer "dry" starts. Having said all that, you're gonna love the car!

oophs

 Well I did push it today a bit, twice to be exact, I'll have to dig out the manual, I might be going on what the dealer told me, anyway the car pulls nicely. For those of you who might be worried, I was gentle getting to the lower six's. I am very impressed with how this car handles and the HP is just right in the S. I drive 35k a year for work, so I have taken the car on two or three 250+/- trips, most of the miles are at distance and varying RPM's., this car is NOT my daily driver and I only drive the car when it is dry outside and usually only on the weekends.
I live in Northern CA and it has been raining here in the valley way too much so maybe the good weather got the best of me today!
Happy motoring.
:)

as long as the car is warmed up, it is most likely ok to let 'er rip at least a little
as you are doing, vary the revs
this, IMO makes the most difference

Well, I am supposed to be able to pick up my 987s today. Since you guys are telling me of this break in period, i might take it on a road trip to rack up the miles. By the end of Sunday, i should have a few hundred thousand miles racked up on my new car, lol. I will probably eat, sleep, and party in the car for the next few weeks. I'm in Houston Texas where its nice and warm and oh so dry.

I've broken in several cars/engines with long road trips. You probably already know this, but . . .

Rule #1 is vary the revs, taking the engine smoothly throughout the rev range for your entire route. A little while in 4th, a little while in 5th, etc. Rural backroads that compel you to shift are best. Try to avoid freeways and interstates.

Rule #2 is don't use the cruise control. See rule #1.

When Andial rebuilt my 993, Dieter commented "a road trip is the best way to break in a new engine." Only took a weekend to rack up 1000 miles. At each 250-mile point, I slightly increased my shift point: 4K, 4.5K, 5K, 5.5K. Smooth acceleration, not pedal to the firewall. At the end of the 1000 miles, the engine sounded sweet at 6K and above.

YMMV
