Goals

Dan,

I was thinking about this thread and regretting my earlier flip comment.

I was surprised at the change in direction. I thought that Putt Putt (the 914) was a great compromise Time Trial/Autocross car at the expense of being a daily driver. This car seemed more of a daily driver candidate than a great Time Trial car. I had assumed that you'd be going in the same direction for this car, hence my surprise.

So, choosing this car makes sense given the goals you mentioned a couple of entries ago. It sounds like this'll be a great car for you.

I'll be interested to learn how you like driving a stock "S" - there's so much push built into the suspension, that I'll bet that you'll soon have an itch to do something about that.

When that itch strikes, I'd recommend putting a suspension under it like KenJ runs (PSS9's, slightly lowered, stronger bars, 710's, ...) I think Ken's car is still pretty steetable and would definitely be more fun in Time Trials and AX's than a stock "S." On the other hand, that'll be an additional $3K - $5K... But Ken does need the competion!

Doug,
I didn't take any offense...;)

as far as a stock Boxster goes, I AXed my '99 on street tires for ~4 years. Only had stickies on for a year or so.
suspension on my '99 was H&R lowering sport springs, stock struts, M030 bars front and year from a ROW S.
and that wasn't done until the second season.
There are techniques to get the car to turn with even a stock suspension.:D

And I wouldn't shy away from DE/TT events with it in stock form. I have instructed/driven plenty stockers at the track over the years....:p

so I decided to pass on this one....too much equipment for my needs.
too many things to poop out:eek:

there are plenty others out there....still looking....;)

What do the 2000 to 2002 986 S get in terms of Highway MPG?

Your mileage may vary...

Dan's right for highway mileage. I drove to Sears Point this weekend for the Wine Country Vintage Races (100 miles each way) and got around 26 in my 986S which included slogging down 19th street in San Francisco on the way back.

On the other hand, I get a bit less than 10MPG on the track:D

Doug

in the 26-28 range I believe Grant.;)

That's about right. 100% of my use was with top down, with wind deflector on, and with AC on (even in winter). Here are all the numbers I can remember getting...

70mph cruise control: about 28.
Normal hwy usage: about 25 (meaning a few high rpms bits in 3rd and 4th)
Normal tank (mostly commutes): 16
Track day: 7
Normal use plus one out of town trip: 20
80mph down the grapevine in neutral: 99.9 (it maxed out)

Blue Boxsters are the best.......

Why not get a 99 and make a semi-spec car??
