Wow, what a great looking ride! I love the "Carerra GT" nose. And those 550 raised rear wheel wells. Oh, There's only the one "spy" photo on the cover of the November Road & Track. But it still gets the juices flowing. Also a very good (if not to critical) article on purchaseing a 986 and all of it misscomings? I will say that I have experenced a good portion of the reported common failors with my 99' Boxster. But she still makes me smile more then my girlfriend:)

Buy the way, does anyone have any imput on going with an optima dry cell battery as oposed to a standard one?

Thanks, and keep motoring, Pete

So that is it for coverage in the Road and Track, just a picture on the front!?

Any other information on the web, pictures, specs etc?

This may be the one I start saving for! :D

Gel battery

I had an optima gel type battery in my old 71 911S. Loved it. The problem with the old 911's was I had 2 batteries, each located under the headlight and you have a VERY hard time getting an original replacement. That size battery is strange and few people carry it. (I only found it available in a couple places) When I did find an "original" they were usuall shipped wet, which means full of water and ready to go. VERY expensive. After some research I found that 1 optima would have the power of 2 normal batteries for my application. The Optima would not fit upright in the normal position under the headlight, but would slide in just fine sideways with the posts sticking out to the sides. As for perfomance, it was in the car several years and worked just fine! Also the price was still a bit cheaper than getting the 2 original ones. Add all this to the fact there is no water to check and I think you can't go wrong. I would get more information as to how it would work in a Boxster though. (cranking amps etc.) Good luck.

Dave

2010 Boxster specs....

The article was fairly non-specific (like they were not telling anything new to followers of the 986/987s)...direct injection larger displacement engines, more hp & torque, new headlights with sculpted body-panels, evolutionary per Porsche. Since the sales of the 987 line have slowed a bit, I'd think the new 988(!??) will be here sooner than 2010. And...it was promised not to be straight line faster than the 911 series. Now there's a revelation...

This is one of the things I don't like very much about R&T (I'm a subscriber). They repeatedly put up new never before seen pics of a car on the cover, making the readers think that there are going to be more pics, detailed writeup, specs etc. inside, but in reality you end up with a half a page of mostly generalized statements (think politicians).

The thing I liked about this issue was the detailed writeup on the 986 boxsters. It was an excellent summary of the issues with the car, the fun factor, used car prices for different model years etc. -- very good read for someone looking for a used boxster, or those new to the fold (although I must admit that those who frequent the boxster forums would not be learning anything new).

2010 and beyond...

With the upcoming Boxster reshaping on the near horizon...will the relative familial associations (Porsche-VW-Audi) have any bearing on the P-car product line? Audi is supposed to have a mid-engine sports vehicle in the works...albeit a 'junior', less expensive, less powerful one than the Boxster. Will the new model Boxster be kicked up a 'notch' as a result? Don't think the conglomeration that is Teutonic auto manufacturing will want to compete within their own stable...usually not the path to profit$.

I can appreciate the more aggressive (via the R&T cover picture) front end design. Will the question, "Is that your wife's car?" be completely marginalized? OK...that was a joke!! It hasn't ever come up while driving the 987...but a friend's SLK has elicited such inquiries on a number of occasions.

.....

Well, I'm not as optimistic as you are. I suspect that they might actually share the same base underpinnings (a la Cayenne/Touareg) - makes sense from a cost standpoint.
