See the picture below. I was looking at the bumper of my '01 Boxster S this morning and noticed through the passenger side front grill this "pointed thingy". It has a wire that goes through the metal plate behind the grill. What is it and what is it there for? Some kind of sensor?

It's a thermometer. It's measuring outside temp.

it is the outside temperature sensor for the on board computer, if you have it as an option.

i asked the same question about 6 months ago and found thar same thing while i was washing the car.

The official designation is the Temperature Sensor (p/n 996.641.142.00)

Thanks everyone. Now I just wish I had the ability to see the temperature on my dash. I can't since I don't have the stalk. It is my understanding that if I hack the OBC I can then read the temperature. Strange that Porsche would include the sensor without the ability to see it anywhere.

You can get the OBC turned on and see the temperature by only using a switch if you want to do it on the low cost plan. Check out JB's OBC Hack Primer for all the details.
