i have accuired a rear speaker bassbox from ebay and would like to hook it up to my cars cd etc, i have a becker tp 7820 which was a direct replacement for my std porsche unit, and my car has the 2 front crappy speakers only at the moment with no amp (i think)
the car is a 2001 2.7.
what would i need to do to add the bassbox, the specs are.............
It has a total of five speakers, as follows:
1/ A Bass-Reflex Speaker
2/ Two Mid-Tone Speakers.
3/ Two High-Tone Tweeters.

sorry for another rear speaker post but i really need help.

cheers
steve

This looks like the same connector used for the optional rear speakers from people like Pelican Parts. I installed these is my car five years ago, and the connector is part of a wiring harness that goes to your radio with the male end that your connector plugs into being located on the outside of the passage side roll bar, below the clam shell. Your best bet is to contact Porsche or Becker for the wiring harness and review some of the sites for the rear speaker installation:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/box_rear_speakers/box_rear_speakers.htm

thanks terry, the problem i can see with that is, my becker unit has spare ways for 2 rear speakers but the unit contains 5 speakers.

the wiring harness only caters for an additional pair (or does it)

cheers

Burfieldstuff-
The wiring harness is fine. I'm not 100% sure of the Bose hook up, but the standard rear speaker kit has 4 speakers and uses the same connection you have 4 pins (one + and - for each channel). It wires 2 speakers for each channel in parallel (the + lead from one speaker is jumped to the + on the other speaker in same channel and likewise w/ the -)

Since the Bose box you have only has 4 leads, I assume it is somewhat the same. You can crack it open and check, but my guess is:

1 Mid-Tone Speaker & 1 High-Tone Tweeter are wired in parallel for each channel (4 speakers) and the Bass-Reflex Speaker is wired like an old center channel - taking the + lead from one channel and the - lead from the other.

Now all you need to do is either contact Becker (or a parts supplier) and get the rear speaker kit harness that runs from your plug to the front of the vehicle or make one yourself. Hope this helps!

yes it does a great deal and i now understand the L/R speaker setup thanks.
it was the centre speaker that threw me into some confusion but your comments have cleared that up fine thanks.

now for a uk supplier where.??:D

thanks guys

steve

Actually, you might want to give this rear speaker kit supplier a shout. The company is PNP and they often sell their kits on the auction site. He is a very good guy and if he can't sell you one, he can get you someone that will. I know he's done business overseas before so I'm sure he can help out: harvey at PNP - email address harveypnp at comcast dot net (remove the spaces, change at to @ and dot to .)

Good luck

cheers burg, i have emailed harvey and will let you know how i get on.

thanks all

I would not suggest in pluging this in directly to your radio/head unit. There are several reasons why; 1. the bose unit you are showing is a subwoofer system, which means the signal that is designed to power this unit has been filtered to reproduce only the low notes/frequency or what is known as bass. By pluging this in directly to your radio, the radio signal that is transmitted is a full range frequency which contains the high frequency and the low frequency. So this unit that you have that is only designed to reproduce low frequency will play both which will not sound properly. 2. Im sure being an electrician by trade you are familiar with ohms, by just tapping in to your radio, and not knowing how the 5 speakers in the bose unit is wired (parallel or series) the ohms may go down too low and cause your head unit or radio to blow up/burn out. What i would do is buy an after market amp that has a built in crossover or hi/low pass filter (alpine, rockford, pioneer etc makes them) and hook it up and use the amp to power the bose subwoofer. Subwoofers generally require more power to run than full range speakers. This way you can adjust the frequency to properly match the sound characteristic of the bose unit. Hope that helps...(I use to install custom stereos about 15 years ago) If you also need a factory non bose amp(premium sound with out dsp) I have one with the factory cd changer and wiring harness because I just installed a custom system in my boxster. That will let go for cheap (just for Babbler folks : )

@boxs2000 gotcha, yes i understand the problems you mention.
i should have the kit delivered tomorrow i can then suss out the internals and post the specs here for you guys to see.

i called porsche today and they say it needs an amp, how much for a bose amp?? £560.00 i couldnt believe it.

i may be interested in the cd/amp if the price/delivery is right, pm me the cost and i will see if my finances will allow it.

thanks again

steve

I would be willing to give you the amp as a free bonus for buying the changer and wiring harness (both works perfect) : ) The cd changer should plug right in (wiring harness is included as well as mounting brackets) and cd cartridge. The amp you must use the factory plug (which I can give you that came out of my car) all this for $200 us dollars plus any shipping cost (I live in Vallejo, California USA) Which radio/head unit do you have?

thanks that is a kind offer at a great price, i have a becker traffic pro high speed sat nav unit which has exactly the same connections as the factory fitted porsche unit it replaced, the wiring to the cd changer is already there the last owner must have removed the unit if it ever had one.

i can pay you via paypal if you have an account, pm me the details and we can arrange details.

thank you.

anyhow i have now bought an amp with phono style inputs, in my store i found a multicore low loss with a shielded 2 pair which might come in handy.

i have a pic of the cable showing the cores with my key as a guide to size, is there any reason that this cable wouldnt do the job, it has the right amount of cores (5) and i plan to use the shielded pair for the remote, the power will obviously run seperate.

dont use those unless they are specifically for car audio use. if they are not and you use them, you may get engine noise through you speakers (this is a high pitch whinning sound that is typically the result of using non sheilded wires and improper grounds. You might as well use some good quality wires like monster cables or rockford fosgate wires. Many of their rca cables comes with remote turn on wire. Also do not skimp on your power and ground cable wires (make sure you get a thick enough wires depending on how much power your amp requires.
