CEL: P0410 & P1411 on my Boxster

So Terry, so you are saying that the parts that you replaced were actually functional parts? I am wondering if I can borrow your parts for references. My friend will debug with me sometimes this week. It will be good to have a good reference. In case, my part is broken, I can buy the part from you and install it since your part is surplus now. So you can recover some cost.

I am determined to get this fix with my friend's help.

Let me know what you think? Feel free to email me clemsonc@yahoo.com.

I no longer have the Electronic Change Over Valve (in the trash), but I believe it was bad to begin with. After replacing it, one of my CEL codes went away. Since I still had one more CEL code to get rid of, I replaced the Air Change Over Valve - - - and now I have both codes back which is why is suspect a vacuum leak during reassembly.

If you read the forums, the Electronic Change Over Valve is the usual culprit and is an inexpensive part at ~$17. With the time and effort it takes to get to these parts, I would just replace this one once I had the car is apart. It is only a matter of time before it goes bad. The Air Change Over Valve on the other hand is ~$130. Since I still have my old one ad you are welcome to it. I live in Willow Glen, you to pick it up when you like.

Finally, my friend and I tracked down the cause of the problem....
The air change-over valve doesn't hold the vacuum. I am going to order the part and the car fix soon. :)

Thanks Terry for giving me a lot of tips and help. And the diagrams/part list on DVD. Thanks!

I will bring it to my mechanic (SPORTECH) tomorrow...

But can someone share some experience, if you have this before?
Is this a big ticket item?

Clemsonc I know you are dealing with another issue with your car but I have a question regarding Sportech. They offer a muffler change out for $690 where they open up a stock muffler and remove the baffles giving the car a sportier sound without the resonance and a claimed 11 HP increase on the dyno. There are no CEL or smog issues associated with it. Are you familiar with the muffler? Do you know anyone who has had it installed that I could talk to? Thanks for any help you can offer,

I helped develop the muffler modification..:)
The first one done was on a stock 2.5 muffler removed from my '99 Box.:D
Baffles are removed and new SS pipe is placed in a manner to slightly increase HP/Torque and also a much more performance oriented sound.
Clemson has one, so do several other Babblers members.
No CEL or other issues in this modification....and the muffler remains basically stock on the exterior, unless you want Mark to place larger SS tips.
Also several Spec Boxster pilots use this modified muffler to meet Laguna Seca sound limits during races there. They must meet a 92db sound limit and this modified muffler does this.
Give Mark a call at 377-8055 and tell him Dan sent you...
I get no financial benefit from you doing so.

Beware mufflers that say they will give you HP increases.

I know Jake Raby did tests on about a half dozen and was surprised at how many actually hurt performance. Enough so that on a car that had a 2.9 engine in it and was also used as a track car they actually went back to the stock muffler IIRC!

We had dyno runs done with the stock muffler in place and then the modified muffler in place. Peak rear wheel hp increased by 11hp and torque was a similar number. Both peak increases in toque and HP happened right around 4500rpms IIRC
The racers would not be using the muffler if it hurt their performance.
That is why it is de-baffled the muffler in a certain way and then placed new SS tubing in a manner to retain torque and still get a nice tone to it.
I don't make anything off these, but I think it is a very good alternative to some of the aftermarket mufflerts that look a bit too "ricey" for me.
You retain the stock looks with a bit more performance and a much nicer tone.
Initially the whole project was just about a lower cost alternative to a nicer sounding exhaust. We were happily surprised about the slight increase in power as well.

Mike, I suggest you speak more specifically in the future...if you haven't tried it, leave it alone.;)
And Jake didn't test our muffler...
Jake is a good guy and does some wonderful things with Boxster motors now, I personally have spoken to him and bought parts from him for my 914 racecar....good guy.

I love my SPORTECH muffler....

I do feel a slightly better response than the stock muffler, it slightly increase in HP, I can feel it. At 5K+ rpm.... it sings really beautifully.
Between 2500 - 3000 rpm, there is some noise (maybe resonance?) but it doesn't bother me too much... I pass that range quickly. I normally cruise above 3K rpm to and from work.

Finally, I think I got it fixed. And we put the boxster back in one piece.
After 2 cold starts... still no CEL. :)

My friend and I accomplished something!!!

Interesting findings/observations:
- My car was powered by a mice... or maybe a few :)
- Don't lock the car with the battery disconnected :(
- Spending a lot of time to find the screws that we dropped on the engine block :)
- my friend hates German engineering now, and he said he will never buy a Boxster :)
