Intermittent Wipers Adjustment?

Hi,

I just bought a 2001 Boxster. A GM dealer had it on his lot on consignment so I did not have an opportunity to talk to the original owner and the GM guys couldn't answer my question.

The car has intermittent wipers but no way to adjust the delay. At least, I can't find a way. The owners manual says to turn the knob located on the console opposite the cigarette lighter. Well, there is no knob. Just a blank cover where the knob would be. I don't get it. When I move the wiper lever to the down position, the intermittent function works. But I can't adjust the delay.

Help................

Hi Mike and Welcome!

I couldn't find a my01 manual but from a my00 manual, the adjustment dial appears to be to the left of the radio on the 'horseshoe' trim. See 'A' in the picture below...

If I remember correctly on my previous Boxster a my03, it seemed to have delayed wipers but I don't recall being able to change the timing on them either! :( (no adjustment knob!?)

Maybe you have wipers that have a 'fixed' delay time?

Al

Thanks for the responses!

Westcoaster - Yeah, my manual shows the adjustment dial left of the radio also. But in reality, its just a blank cover.

Loren - Very informative DIY thread. Thanks.

Its probably just me, but I find it rather odd that Porsche would install intermittent wipers with no means to adjust the delay. Oh well. Now I know how to add the adjustment dial if I choose.

Thanks again,
Mike

There were two different versions of the wipers available. I beleive the adjustable one was an option. (My 99 did not have it.) There used to be a VW part (relay) that you could buy that would allow the wipers to leran a delay. Basically you swapped out the relay in the fuse area and then you could set a delay by turning the wipers to the intermittant setting, turn it back off then back on when it needed clearing and it would memorize the time. I did that hack on my 99 and it worked great.
I did a google search and found the following:
The Wiper Delay hack involves replacing the existing Wiper Relay with VW Relay Part # 3B0 955 531 ($30-$40). With this Relay, the Wiper interval can be infinitely set between 0.2 sec. and 6 min. by using the wiper stalk to set the interval.

Thanks Steve.
I did read about that VW fix. Sounds like it may be the way to go.
