Just saying hello

Just bought a 2006 Boxster S. Flying to Texas Saturday to pick it up and drive it to Washington State.

Only trouble is I can't seem to get any work done. Just obsessing. This is the first nice car I've treated myself to in 25 years. Motorcycling, sailing, and most lately bicycling resulted in my not caring about what car I drove until.... =o)

Don't get me wrong, I liked the seller. Very honest and met my price, but the list of options, complete with exclamation marks tickled me. I assume at least half of them are standard on the 2006 S:

Maybe some of the members can tell me which of these really IS a big deal.

This is my first Porsche. Back in college I had friends with a 356 and a 912. The 986/987 seems to carry on that tradition.

I was always more interested in handling than power. I've never even test driven a Boxster, so I'm really looking forward to picking this up Saturday.

The list looks like the standard options on a Boxster S. But the pictures look great, nice looking car. I think you are going to have a great time driving this sport machine. Have fun.

Due to having to do at least 2200 miles in 3 days, I'll have to do much of this on the interstates. Prob'ly head West and up thru NV to avoid potential weather issues.

Anyone suggest Houston to Eastern Washington winter routes?

Also, since I'll just be cruising, is there a recommended 'sweet spot' rpm for economy and long engine life.

Before planning on driving have you considered shipping the car? I just went through this myself last month and decided to ship instead of drive. The cost of a plane ticket and 3 days of travel will likely be the same for shipping the car. At least with shipping you don't have to worry about road condition and the weather. If weather wasn't a factor than I would definitely drive.

Thanks. And in keeping with that theme, the reason I'm not shipping it is because I want it NOW!

The rest of my stable is a 1997 Mitsubishi Diamante with a bad paint spot on the hood and 4 tires that leak air due to age.

Of course, I'm not mentioning the motorcycles which is why the tires die of old age before the tread wears out.

Thanks Pedro. BTW, I looked at your site. Looks like some great DIY mods. Also appears the 997 came out with many of those mods already done by the factory. Do you, or anyone, have suggestions for 997 hacks?

My 2000 986 runs really sweet @ 75 - 77 mph, right about 3000rpm's. Fast enough to make time, but not so fast as to arouse the Highway Patrol!! Cool Runnin', Mon'!!
