Tarett sway bars or PSS9 ?

So after meeting with my CPA yesterday, it looks like Uncle Sam will be so nice and give me some money soon (well actually will give me some of my hard earned money back) :D

So now my question is: What gives me more bang for the buck (for DE days):

a) Tarett front and rear sway bars plus drop links

b) PSS9

side note: I currently have stiffer Eibach springs and my car has close to 75k miles on the suspension (not the engine :p - which includes 20 A/X and 20 track days), so I am not sure how much longer the shocks will last.

Any opinions? Dan, Grant, Fuhrius, Buehler?

it is pretty tough since both are good items...
but if your shocks have that many miles I would probably pop for the PSS9s/10s now....
better bang for your suspension buck....
I would also look into the KWs, that is what Grant is running.

Chris what is your car doing, or not doing, that you want to correct?

he isn't trying to correct anything, he is trying to improve his overall handling.
and get some adjustability in his suspensioin:D

You should try to do both.
If not all at once, then in steps.
These mods will complement each other.
But if I were to do one first I'd go with the PSS9s.
BTW, the shocks don't really have a limited life.
If they're not leaking, the will work fine for many, many miles.
I still have my OEM M030 shocks at 194K miles and they work great with the set of Eibach Pros.
Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

Sorry, I just now noticed my name wasn't on the list so I'll go to another post and leave this to the experts.

Needless to say I welcome and encourage input from everyone :D
And yes, Dan is right I want to make my car go faster/handle better for the upcoming track season.

Side note: Does anyone know a good (cheap) source for PSS9?
Bonus question: I thought the PSS10 are only for PASM cars, will they work on my 2002 S ?

Chris,

from what I understood the PSS10s were the new updated replacement for the older PSS9s.

by the way, PSS9 or PSS10, and adjustable bars are what the specBoxs use for suspension, they are able to upgrade the springs to 450 or 500#s.
THey also run GT3 adjustable front arms, to get lots of camber up front:D

looks like PSS9s are about $2K new...but sometimes you can find used sets on Craigslist....

Chris check this out....http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/pts/1656497948.html
Might want to check the parts numbers to see if they would work for you

Dan,

thanks for the link, I saw that yesterday and checked and unfortunately they are only for 987.
But they look like a steal for anyone with a 987...

Chris,

Really depends on your intended direction with the car. PSS9/PSS10 and KW Variant II are decent street/track combo's.

If you want to step things up Motons, JRZ's and KW Variant III are a little more of a true track coilover. But youre going to be giving up some more street comfort with these setups.

If your looking for order. I would do coilover first. Then put GT3 front bar on the car and tarret rear bar with end links.

If you do the coilovers consider either camber plate up front or GT3 control arms which allow you to adjust camber.

There are plenty of well proven combinations out there being run on Boxsters. Just dont forge any new ground with setup.

I run KW Variant II's on my car as they came out of the box. Sort of funny as my car is pretty extreme and I run street coilovers with springs that KW shipped for street use. I just run high levels of dampening to keep everything flat.

Needless to say I welcome and encourage input from everyone :D

I'd do the sways

I'd do what you can to reduce roll first...with the stiff springs, the struts get pushed less and can last a long time...they're good struts, and there are countless guys slaying in boxsters on stock suspension. I'd do the sway bars and get rid of the stock drop links...I did gt3 front / tarret rear bars and tarret drop links...couple to techart springs and stock 01s struts. had the car at laguna last week and the the car was fantastic. going again tomorrow and infineon sunday. I haven't done the pss9's so I can't compare, but the bigger sways (set second to softest front and second to hardest rear) made a huge difference in the handling. I, personally, thing that coilovers are over-rated, though I'll likely eventually do them. I just don't think there's much of a bang for the buck there if you already have springs you like (and that drop the car).

I would also give string consideration to spending the difference on brake stuff...I just went through mine and was SUPER pleased with the results. I did PFC floating hats / rotors in front and new oem rotors in back, with pfc 97 pads, stainless lines, castrol srf, and gt3 front brake ducts. not a hint of fade all day and the car was super stable under braking.

my two cents. funny how people only give you a penny for your thoughts though.

so why are the GT3 front sway bars better than the Tarrett bars?

Chris, I am going to have the spec-racer setup...

- PSS9 w/ 450#/500# springs
- Tarett front and rear sway bars plus drop links
- Tarett rear toe links
- GT3 front control arms

All the parts adding up equals to the cost of my 1997 car. I hope they are worth the money.
I have all the parts now, just need time to install them (sometime in April).
It might be too crazy for street use. Just let me know if you want to try it out in an AX.

Hey, thanks for the offer
I gladly take you up on it :D

OK, a big Thank You for everyone who shared their opinion and experience and educated me.
So it seems that both alternatives are pretty damn good and there also seems to be a slight bias towards coilovers.

But in light of my "bang for the buck" question, I think I will go with the sway bars:

The sway bars will cost me (incl. installation) around $1.5k
The coilovers (plus either camber plates or GT3 control arms) will (incl installation) costs me more than twice as much.

So it appears that the sway bars will have more "bang for the buck"

Oh, by the way it also seems that my front sway bar bushings are worn out, so that made the decision even easier ;)
