We've been talking about this in another thread, but I think it now deserves a separate place of its own (thank you for the prompt Dede!).

A few of us are getting together to do the OBC (On Board Computer) hack etc. on our boxsters this Saturday. Currently, we are only planning to do the button hack (not the four-stalk one). We may also do other work (rear speakers etc.) given time.

Here are the details:

When: 10 am on 10/27/2007 (this Saturday)
Where:
2840 Mauricia Av
Santa Clara, Ca 95051

2 blocks from the GMC dealer on Stevens creek.
Stevens Creek Porsche is also only 2 blocks away.

This is cas951's place, who is a new boxster owner (but a long-time porsche owner). He has Ramps, jacks, tools, aircompressor, power tools etc. If anyone wants to work on their car, or if you have done these hacks before and wish to share your knowledge, please join us. Please respond in this thread if you are interested.

It might be a stupid question but here it is :o

Will hacking my OBC make the car faster

Hey Gerry, sorry to disappoint you, but nope :) . The OBC stands for the on-board computer, and displays things such as temperature, avg. speed, avg. mpg etc. If ordered as a factory option, the OBC is the 4th stalk on the steering wheel (otherwise there are only three stalks). The hack we are doing will not be the 4-stalk hack, but instead the button hack, where we use one of the "dummy" buttons in the central console for most of the operations. A google search for "OBC boxster hack" should turn up relevant webpages with detailed/better info.

yeah Gerri it will give you 30 extra ponies and shave 1 second on your 0-60! : ) hahaha just kidding! you gonna be there since its in your hood? I may go but still unsure due to the wifey and kid factor...

Count on us to be there

Kevin & I will be there Sat at 10:00 am
What tools do you need?
Dremel ?
Ohm meter ?

Dede & Kevin

Looking forward to seeing you both Kevin and Dede. The dremel tool will be much appreciated, and the ohm meter should come in handy if (when) we get into trouble with the wiring. Thanks!

Could you be more specific on exactly what the hack is?

Thanks!

Check this out for some old Babblers events, etc:

Yup, those were the references - thanks for adding the URL Dede. Funny story - I'd originally gone to Yoseif's website since he was selling his boxster, and had put a link to the pics.

The Hack: All 986s (not sure about 987) come with the OBC circuitry/hookups. However, only those cars that have the OBC added as a purchase option (implying that you have a 4-stalk steering wheel) can see/change the temp, avg. speed, mpg etc. - the features of the OBC. The fact that the hookup is already in place give rest of us an opportunity to get access to the same features. Before we do that though, you need to get the circuitry "activated" - which can be done at the dealership (usually for free) or someone who has a PST2 tool. You can also get this activation done after you do the hack.

The hack itself is well explained in the pages you linked to, but basically it involves creating a wiring harness, opening up the instrument cluster and center console, and connecting things together. I myself have never done it, so it should be double the fun :)

I have the OBC and can see/change the temp, avg. speed, mpg etc.

I might roll by with some beer so I can sit and laugh at you guys. Be nice to check out the garage. Sounds like a pro set up. I, too, have a Dremel Tool if you could use more than one.

Heh - RR, I can assure you that we will give you plenty of opportunity for laughs :)

If it is not too much bother, I think having an extra dremel might be a good idea - thanks for the offer. See you Saturday.

Someone get pictures so I can have a good laugh. I'll be somewhere in the Four Corners area, so I don't think I'll be making it. But beer and a dremel tool sounds like a recipe for an interesting afternoon.:D Have a good time I'll see you all when I get back.

You are right, Larry...BEER and DREMEL

I'll bring in an extra lawn chair to hang out with R/R and extra bandages...just in case :D:D:D:D

this is like the tv show...TOOL TIME :p
