I have recently upgraded my 2000 Boxster with a factory GPS unit delivered for $609 (new CDs covering the US included). It was as simple as remove the old radio (CDR 220) plug the new unit in and install the antenne and wammo. The whole procedure took one hour and a half. MOST of the time took properly routing and hiding the gps antenne.

The CDR 220 unit has three connections. One is the radio antenne. Two is the wiring connection Socket A and Three is socket C1. These plugs went into the same connections in the new radio and with the GPS antenne the unit worked prefectly.

The tech at BECKER said the BECKER TRAVEL PRO 4763 would work on my 2000 Boxster with no problem. The 2000 Boxster came with two AMPS, the lower model amp is a plug and play. The upgraded amp is not plug and play. Meaning you would have to do some rewiring to get the unit to work but the TECH said it could be done.

Here is the info BECKER TRAVEL PRO model number 4763. Call Tony at Becker USA 888 423 3537 ext 1224. I would suggest you talk to TECH Support and confirm your model and year would work with the TRAVEL PRO. You will also need to get the radio removal keys.

And to make things even better. The TRAVEL PRO
4763 is a PORSCHE radio. The Front has Porsche printed on the radio and when you turn it on it Displays PORSCHE for a few seconds before it goes into regular screen.

In my situation it was as easy as I described it here. I cannot guarantee your installation will be as easy as mine. I wish you good luck and know you will LOVE the GPS as much as I do.

Wow the whole unit was only $609???? Was this a new unit? if so please let me know where you ordered it. I too have a 2000 Boxster and would like to install a navi in my car. Is this the navi unit that is a double din size?

I agree, a great value. I am told the unit is new NOT refurbished. The radio is the exact size as the original CDR 220 Becker radio. The Navigation prompts are simple arrows on the screen and voice prompts. There is NO rolling map like you see on most vehicle GPSs.

I did an internet search using BECKER TRAVEL PRO 4763 as the key words and got photos, owners manual and installation instructions. I would do this because the unit came with everything EXCEPT the radio removal keys and the BECKER Installation instructions.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original posting you are supposed to hook up the REVERSE signal to the Travel Pro. I have not done this yet BUT the unit still works very well. The Reverse signal is used to tell the unit reverse motion to ensure accurate positioning. I have NOT noticed any inaccuries. I have read there is a loose wire under the drivers seat which is a reverse signal. This wire could easily be hooked up to the unit. I have installed 3 Blaupunkt RNS 150 navigation units in my other cars none of them had the reverse signal hooked up so I may never get around to doing it on my boxster.

I do encourage you to do a little homework. Whichever AMP you have may complicate the installation. The upgraded AMP (I think it is the one with DSP - Digital Signal Processing) does complicate the installation but it sounded like the BECKER Tech was willing to help me rewire whatever needed to be rewired. I told him that my amp had 4 X 35 written on it and he assured me it was not the upgraded amp and it would work fine. Which it did.

The original posting has BECKERs phone number in New Jersey. Ask to talk to a Tech guy. They are very nice. Delivery was Via UPS, got it in five working days.

I can send photos of my radio if you would like.

RG, good thread. I too am looking to add GPS to my 2001 'S, and would like the version that fits the hole left by the CDR 220. I'm calling Tony tomorrow. Where did you mount the antenna; under the dash, under the door panel? Thanks
 
Thanks. I appreciate it. I looked around for a good place to put the antenna. Ideally it would go on the rear trunk lid. But I did not want to remove interior panels. For the time being I put the antenna on the front windshield low in the corner on the passenger side. There is a rubber plug behind the battery. The antenna runs through that plug into the front trunk area to the windshield.

I am considering putting the antenna in a new location. There is a plastic piece below the windshield wipers which has many holes which may allow GPS reception. This location is not visible and does not interfere with the lines of the car. But currently the antenna is not too visable. Let me know if you need any photos.

searched the internet for "BECKER TRAVEL PRO 4763" and got very little. how about some links to pics, manual and installation instructions please?

RG, I read somwhere that the antennae could be mounted in the door panel, which leads me to believe it could be mounted in the trunk area near the battery perhaps. Any experts out there with thoughts on antennae placement?
 
Photos of Travel Pro Installation

Hi Guys,
Attached are some photos of my installation.
First is my ideal Placement for the antenna. On the rear deck lid. Pictured is my '83 SC.
Second is where I currently have it on my Boxster. In the lower corner of windshield on passenger side. As I mentioned earlier I am thinking about putting the antenna in the perforated plastic piece which lies between the windshield and front trunk/hood. The Antenna can also be placed inside the vehicle on the dash. My experience with the antennas is that they work best in the open.
Third is of the installed unit. You can see PORSCHE stamped on the plastic face. On start up the LCD display shows PORSCHE for 4 seconds.
Fourth is another shot of the unit with the vehicle lights on. The LCD display really blends in with the AC unit. You are able to select this as the default screen on the Travel Pro. Sorry it is a little blurry but you get the idea.
Note that the flashing light on the CDR 220 unit is also on the Travel Pro. When I first installed the Travel Pro the alarm would chirp as if the radio was removed eventhough it wasn't. After a few locking and unlockings it stopped chirping. I had the same phenomena when I took out the CDR 220 and reinstalled it.

Owner's and Installation Manual Info

The Earlier Thread from Cease is the one I used to find the Becker USA phone number. Somewhere on the Net I was able to download the both the Owner's Manual and the Installation Manual. It must have been on the BECKER USA web page which I cannot seem to find now.
I tried uploading the files here but they are too big. 1.5 and 2.5 mb respectively. I will keep on searching and hope to have good news fpr you guys soon. The Travel Pro I received from BECKER did not come with the installation manual only the owners manual. Admittedly I did not use the installation manual when I put my radio in.

I'll keep on looking for the web site.

GPS installation

Wow, that was easy. I ordered my Becker GPS radio yesterday, got it today, (asked for overnight shipping), in about 15 minutes I was doing route calculations. Removal of the old one was easy, the keys were provided. My Porsche rear speaker kit plugged right in. I routed the antennae to the inside, passenger side dashboard, under the windscreen, clear view to the sky. It was easy to route the wire under the dash along the right side rubber gasket, up to the dash. It sits on the dash; I used a small piece of velcro (provided) to fasten. See picture below. The folks at Becker were excellent. Many thanks to RG for his help and the installation manual he sent me. The GPS works great, is easier to use than my wife's Mercedes S500 Nav system.

CONGRATULATIONS Cease! !
My source at Becker tells me the Dealers order these same units when someone goes in to upgrade their cars to the NAV system.

Remember the DSP amps will require some modifications but can be easily made to work.

My next project is finding the best CD changer for the unit. Stay Tuned

.. no chance in getting your source to supply the new PCMs at the Becker price as opposed to the Porsche price? $4k seems a little steep for a navigation system.

Unfortunately, I have a sneaky suspicion that the addition of any new audio system component requires a computer update due to the MOST network installed on the new boxsters.

I have experienced this "joy" with my SAAB now for the past two years. Enabling the "Aux-in" port on the back of the head unit required being hooked up to the dealer's "Tech II" device via the OBDC.
 
This upgrade will most probably not work with later Boxsters with the MOST system. It worked on my 2000 Boxster, Cease Confirmed that it worked on his on 2001 Boxster. Not sure about other years. The Becker Travel Pro was $609 delivered and it easily replaced the stock CDR 220. The TV screen nav systems will be a lot more but to be honest I rarely use my Rolling map display in my 2005 Cayenne. The Arrow prompts are easier to read while driving.
 
The arrow prompts appear as if they are down towards the bottom portion of your center display. Do they appear in the instrument cluster at all?

I didn't anticipate the upgrade you've successfully installed working with the MOST system, I was in reference to the new PCM w/Navi. Try as I might, when I was looking to buy there were no cars within a reasonable drive that had this option installed.

Rolling maps are wonderful - it gives you an idea of where you are in relation to your surroundings. The wife has one on her M Class, and they are especially useful while flying around (for obvious reasons). I guess growing up with a C=64, Nintendo, and the likes, I'm rather addicted.
 
Sorry for the confusion. The downward arrows shown in the photo are part of the calibration process and not a navigation prompt. The navigation arrows are bold and easy to see. I can post a photo if you would like. No the prompts are not displayed on the Instrument cluster.

I agree this upgrade will not work with cars with the MOST system.

There are navigation units available which have the tv screen come out of the unit and fold up. They are fairly expensive and do not have that porsche factory look.

I suspect the factory tv screen nav system could be installed but that would cost a pretty penny or two.
 
Would the Trafic Pro work on a 99 Boxster with the hi-fi and rear speaker kit? Iam currently using the CDR 220,but am always looking for enhancments.
